Agana PCG Conducts a Parol-Making Workshop at St. John' School in Guam

18 November 2024, Guam – The Philippine Consulate General in Guam, headed by Consul General Rosario P. Lemque, conducted a Parol-making Workshop at St. John’s School on 15 November 2024. The workshop had seventeen (17) enthusiastic participants which included seven students, nine teachers and one parent.

The Parol is a Christmas lantern that symbolizes hope and an expression of faith. In the Philippines, parols come in various shapes and sizes, from simple five-pointed stars to intricate, illuminated designs.  Each one reflects the Filipino spirit of celebrating light and joy during the Christmas season.

All the participants had a great time making their own Parol. The workshop was not only a creative exercise but also an opportunity to promote Filipino culture. Participants gained practical skills and a better understanding of the craftsmanship behind the Parol, a significant Filipino Christmas tradition. Many shared plans to apply what they learned in their own communities, whether at home, in schools, or workplaces.

One of the teachers said, “I will teach my family how to make a Parol. It will be a good bonding time with my family.”

Another participant said, “My husband and I manage a construction firm, we will have a parol-making session with our H2 workers.”

The Philippine Consulate General remains committed to promoting Filipino heritage and fostering cultural awareness through meaningful activities such as this, strengthening connections within the Filipino community and beyond in Guam. END
