In observance of National Language Month and History Month, the Department of Foreign Affairs reintroduces "Flora de Filipinas," a collection of illustrations on Philippine flora that was diligently compiled by scientist Fr. Manuel Blanco, OSA, and first published in 1837.
An illustrated edition, which resulted in a five-volume work published between 1877 and 1883, features the drawings of Fray Mariano Fabregas, OSA; Fray Miguel Lucio, OFM; Agustin Saez; Ramon Santa Coloma; and Emma Vidal. Also included are the illustrations made by Filipino artists Cayetano Arguelles, Francisco Domingo, brothers Regino and Rosendo Garcia, Jose Lorenzo Guerrero, Isidro Llado, F. Pardo, Felix Martinez, R.L. Salamanca, Miguel Zaragoza and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo.
Filipinos can now access rare historical sources, downloadable in high resolution and for free, like the five-volume opus of Fr. Blanco, thanks to the generosity of the Biblioteca Nacional de España.
Featured here are 12 laminas or botanical illustrations from the Fr. Blanco opus. The DFA, in cooperation with Project Saysay, curated this series that highlights the role of the selected plants in Filipino society, culture, and history. Indigenous names are also written in baybayin, as DFA's humble contribution in popularizing the use of one of the ancient scripts of the country.
The Flora de Filipinas series is an official activity of the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.
Bilang pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa at Buwan ng Kasaysayan, muling ipinakikilala ng Kagawaran ng Ugnayang Panlabas (DFA) sa publiko ang obrang "Flora de Filipinas," isang kalipunan ng mga larawan ng mga halaman sa Pilipinas na masikap na kinalap ng siyentistang si Padre Manuel Blanco, OSA, at unang nalimbag noong 1837.
Mula 1877 hanggang 1883 naman ay nalimbag ang edisyon nito na kasama ang mga larawang guhit nina Fray Mariano Fabregas, OSA; Fray Miguel Lucio, OFM; Agustin Saez; Ramon Santa Coloma; at Emma Vidal. Kabilang din dito ang mga guhit ng mga Pilipinong sina Cayetano Arguelles, Francisco Domingo, ang magkapatid na Regino at Rosendo Garcia, Jose Lorenzo Guerrero, Isidro Llado, F. Pardo, Felix Martinez, R. L. Salamanca, Miguel Zaragoza at Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo.
Sa kabutihang loob ng Biblioteca Nacional de España, may access na ang mga Pilipino sa kakaibang mga batis historikal na maaaring ma-download nang malinaw at libre, tulad ng limang-tomong obra ni Padre Blanco.
Tampok sa seryeng ito ang 12 mga lamina o ilustrasyong botanikal mula sa aklat ni Padre Blanco. Nakipagtulungan ang DFA sa Project Saysay Inc. upang maisaayos ang pagtatampok ng seryeng ito kung saan makikita ang kahalagahan ng mga piling halaman na ito sa lipunan, kultura, at kasaysayang Pilipino. Nakasulat din sa baybayin ang katutubong pangalan ng mga halaman, bilang munting ambag ng DFA sa pagpapalawig ng paggamit sa isa sa mga sinaunang sulat ng bansa.
Ang seryeng “Flora de Filipinas” ay opisyal na gawain sa ilalim ng 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.
